Koroso Cultural Dance in Kano State


Kano is well known for its diversity in cultural activities which also promotes and rouse the affairs of tourism in Nigeria, the moment Kano is mentioned in art of cultural propagation the idea of koroso cultural dance comes into the mind of the people.  Koroso Cultural dance .Has been in existence since the inception of the Sokoto caliphate, it is a dance of the Hausa/Fulani speaking people in Kano state.
The dance is named after the rites tie on the dancers like koroso which is made from leave of raffia palm that is raffia palm tree with in a way to contain the seed of an edible wild plant known as  ‘’Tafasa”  which gives a rattle mystic sound to the dance rhythm.
(Picture with sound) the dance is performed by able bodied young female and male to commemorate the harvest of farm produce during the Harmatan  period in those days, as time and system changes the dance  is performed in  all  happy ceremonial  occasions. Koroso cultural dance was first formed from the original sources of the dance in 1972 by the staff and student of the then Kano Community Commercial College now Aminu Kano Commercial College with only three dancing steps
1. Dangwarirya
2. Gwamna Mai Baza (The Shaggiest Cattle Leader)
3. And Gaisuwa which means ( Saluation)
Through this effort the state government in 1974 saw it necessary to convert the group as Kano State Cultural Group, this there for made the koroso cultural dance to be the first state owned cultural group in Nigeria. Therefore more dance steps were introduced from the variety of Hausa and Fulani original Dance choreographed for stage presentation. The additional dance steps are
a. Nyore Nyore (Fulani) Dance with me
b. Mai Fula Fulai (Hausa ) Wrangling Dance
c. Rawar Noma (Hausa) Farming Dance
d. Taro Na Bata (Hausa) I give three her pairs
e. Banjo  (Fulani) High Life dance
f. Gwauro Ina Matarka (Hausa) Bachelor where is your wife?
g. Rawar Bindiga (Hausa) Gun Dance
